The Vice President had four children; two sons and a daughter (deceased) from his first marriage to Neilia Biden, and a daughter with the Second Lady, Dr. Jill Biden.
On December 18, 1972, 1-year old Naomi and mother Neilia died in a horrific car accident after a tractor hit the station wagon they were in. Beau and Hunter, also in the vehicle, were critically injured, but made full recoveries. The accident occurred while the family was returning home after picking up a Christmas tree near Hockessin in Delaware.
Biden, who was in Washington at the time, related the phone call he received shortly after the incident.
“To the loved ones of the victims, there is nothing really we can say to erase this tragedy. And, those of you who think it's presumptuous of me to say that... in a different circumstance, I got one of those phone calls. I got one of those phone calls like Davis Sezna got. I got a phone call saying, "Your wife's dead; your daughter's dead." And I've only said that three times in public before. But, I say it here because it's so important for you to understand. I got one of those phone calls… It wasn't an airplane, but it was a phone call: "They're dead." And, I can tell you from experience, and some of you can, too, that feeling that inside your chest is a black hole and you're being sucked inside it. I know from experience there's nothing in the near term we can do to bring solace, relief or peace to those people.”

In 1981, Jill gave birth to Ashley Blazer Biden. The thirty-year-old currently works as a social worker for the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families. She married Delawarean Dr. Howard Krein in June, 2012.
Her brother, Beau, a lawyer, served as the Attorney General of Delaware between 2007 and 2011, after a nine-year stint as Federal Prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office (1995-2004). He is currently a Major in the 261st Theater Tactical Signal Brigade of the state’s Army National Guard/State Defense Force, serving in Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. He was deployed in Iraq for a year starting from October 3, 2008.
On his unit’s return from Iraq, the state staged a glitzy homecoming celebration. VP Biden was on the verge of tears as he welcomed Beau back.
“As a Delawarean I stand here steeped in pride. As an American I am awed by the quality and significance of your service. That as a parent, as a father, I can't tell you the feeling I have… to be welcoming home a son.”
