Declined 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate
Former Governor of Arkansas

Mike Huckabee

Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee

Huckabee position on Trade Issues

• Supports NAFTA and free trade with Mexico, calling for a "strong market of the Americas."

• In 2006, as governor of Arkansas, he signed an agreement for increased commerce between Arkansas and South Korea.

• When asked by FOX news whether he would go ahead with a different version of the North American Free Trade Agreement, he replied that free trade agreements were great to have and that he definitely agreed with NAFTA and CAFTA, but it should be ensured that the agreements were followed by both parties, which was not happening.

• He said that the financial crisis is national security threat as a country can be free only if it can feed, fuel and fight for itself.

• Huckabee stated that he does not support the NAFTA Superhighway that is currently being built from Mexico to Canada which when completed will have certain parts under foreign management.

• In his book 'From Hope to Higher Ground' Huckabee said, "I believe in free trade and allowing the marketplace to push innovative ideas to the top and prices to the bottom."

• He stated that giving good business to farmers in America was also good for the consumer, because the principle behind subsidies was that production will continue at a higher level as a result of which cost of food will be lowered. He said that subsidies would also help to safeguard the farmers from natural disasters and hassles due to rise in prices of fuel, feed and fertilizers.
